Robert Shaw was a real man in the Civil War. He took hundreds of black men to Fort Wagner and lost his life. Along with all his men, he was stripped naked and thrown in a large mass grave. Same as the movie.
Matt did a great job making himself look and act like the man. Very sad that we wasted all those men and a very loyal soldier in such a stupid battle. They sent the men along with their commander to the front of the line to draw the heavy fire and test the line for weakness.
So at the end of the attack they paid him and his men back by stripping off all their equipment and throwing them in a hole. Robert's dad said he was always proud of his sacrifice.
But this and a movie is about all that celebrates his and his men's great sacrifice. Very sad.
