Why we have a day off.

File:The Storming of Ft Wagner-lithograph by Kurz and Allison 1890.jpg

I often don't see why we hide history.     Today's day off from work was originally made to remember the battle to take Fort Wagner (as seen in the movie Glory).     It was designed to help the just freed slaves to remember the hundreds of black soldiers and their white officers who died at that battle and were mass graved there.      July 11 1863.    12 rebels and 339 union died in the battle.    This was the first ruin at the fort.    Then they took the whole black 54th inf. on the 18th against the fort and lost the whole group including the white officers.    Robert Shaw being the leader of the group also fell that day.    Even though it was a major lose of life and the battle was lost, it softened the rebels up enough for the 28th day to come and the Union army took the fort.     So brave men gave their lives to at least win the fort.     The big shame was the fact the whole group was mass graved near the fort.    Their bodies ruined the water and the fort was left only after  few months.     But as you sit home today, realize this is the battle that gave you that day off.
